Sattel, Switzerland

As if our time on lake Zurich in the small town of Rapperswil wasn’t enough of a reprieve from the reality of no obligations, being unemployed on the vacation of a lifetime, Sattel cured us. We bunkered in for what would be a few days in isolation in the Swiss alps. We took a gondola up to what would be our lovely escape and we brought enough food and drinks to last us the entire length of our stay.
After arriving by train and bus in Sattel, we stopped at the local market and loaded up two shopping carts full of supplies. The first cart held our travel bags that didn’t comfortably fit on our back. The second cart we loaded to the brim with 18 meals worth of food, cooking necessities such as olive oil, salt, pepper, mustard, sweet treats, and the ingredients to make a passion spritz. All eyes were on us as we completely blocked aisles wearing our fully loaded backpacks and hauling two carts. People were cordial and smiled but we were an anomaly in their eyes. In the hour plus in the store, no other patron checked out with more than a few items. And then there was us.
We hauled our loot to the gondola station and began our trip up the mountain. The chalet Savvy booked in the neighborhood of Mostelberg was perfect. There was one bedroom, a full kitchen and living room and even a washer & dryer! As soon as we figured out how to turn the water on, we were in business.
The next few days consisted of home cooked meals, music, the occasional walk & hike, spectacular views of the mountains and lake Agerisee, and many, many games of cards. We learned the official, and competitive, way of playing gin-rummy and battled each other in J’s family rules of normal rummy. All the while, we attempted to perfect a passion spritz. 2+ parts Prosecco, 1 part Paseo, <1 part gin, <1 part juice, <1 part tonic.
Mostelberg was a neat yet very little mountain ski village. The three chairlifts provided ample access to the skiable area and a couple of the mountain lodges doubled as Inn’s as well as personal homes? That being said, summer in Mostelberg was a kid’s wonderland. They set up a large parkour jumpy house, had a set of connected trampolines, and built a luge down the back facing hill. To top it off, the little town had constructed a 374 meter suspension bridge.
We were sad to end our stay in Mostelberg. It provided us with everything needed in a quaint mountain retreat. Next stop, off to Lake
Como.
