Brussels, Belgium
Belgium waffles are really something and boy, we were ready for one on the morning of July 4th.
We exited our hostel in Brussels and headed for the highest-rated nearby breakfast spot. We sat down and looked at their DELICIOUS menu, pancakes and french toast with all sorts of berries, toppings, chocolate croissants, coffees, lattes and no waffles!
Bummed at our mistake, we headed for the middle of town where we knew we would find our treasure. Next stop: Hashtag Burgers and Waffles. Safe choice right? Think again. We immediately knew there was an issue when the waitress said, “let me explain how our restaurant works.” That’s never a good sign when you’re hoping to order the namesake of the country you’re in. They only served waffle burgers. Steak, chicken, or veggie waffle-burgers. We apologized, left, and trudged on.
As we approached city center we came across two identical waffles shops across the street from each other. Imagine the sugariest and heaviest waffles you can, and then add then add a baseball-sized heaping scoop of heavy whipped cream right on top of that. Trying to avoid diabetes, we just couldn’t do it. Savvy ordered an iced latte and the man behind the counter, who spoke English, made her a chocolate coffee milkshake. Tasty but wtf??
Taking no more chances, we got directions to the WAFFLE FACTORY. So. Dang. Good. Toasted crispy on the outside, cooked through yet doughy on the inside. It was the waffle of our dreams. Followed by nearly an immediate sugar crash.
