Rome > Naples > Ischia, Italy
We were particularly nervous about this travel day, as we had no reliable source of information regarding the various modes of transportation we’d need to take to get to Ischia, an island just west of Naples.
We knew we’d need to take a bus to the train station, which would take us about four hours south to Naples, where we’d need to walk to the ferry port headed towards Ischia. After the one hour ferry ride, we’d need to walk to a bus stop to take us another one hour drive around Ischia to get to the town of Serra Fontana, where we’ll be staying the next few days.
To make things more complicated, there were two bus routes headed towards Serra Fontana, one around the coast and one through the mountains. The mountain route looked insanely miserable (see photo) and there is no freaking way we’d make it through in one piece. Given the unreliability of the bus schedules (I swear they show up when and where they want, and then head in a direction of their choosing). So our best bet was to try to break through the language barrier with a photo of the coast route we wanted (aka NEEDED) to take.
Through some act of God, we managed to get on the right bus, headed in the right direction and taking the coastline route. Once arriving at the Serra Fontana bus stop, we took a short shuttle to the hotel and stood in disbelief at the beauty of the little beach town and our luck in even making it there.
After unloading our bags, we celebrating with a poolside drink and a game (or four) of cards. We were so stoked to have arrived and giddy about what the next few days had in store for us.
